And so it begins!

tardis, sanctuary

I saw three condos today. The first one was a big hell no. Nothing terrible about it but nothing special, either. The building was a bit rundown with signs of neglect. The condo was small and the floorplan meh. Weirdly, they'd put marble tile in the teeny tiny kitchen which just made NO sense and seemed faintly ridiculous instead of a luxury upgrade. A new counter would have made more sense.

Second one was better but paint color choices -- oy! Orange and yellow main rooms. A rather icky sky blue for the bedroom. Wood laminate floors (meh) and not very many windows. Better use of space overall, though, and I really liked the kitchen a lot. The assigned off street parking area was roomy and looked very easy-access, and the building looked cared-for.

The third one had no parking but was an elegant and very quiet street with plenty of street parking (boo but still -- that's not unusual for the area). The building was GORGEOUS, a beautifully kept up vintage u-shaped property with lions over the doors, original windows, and personality oozing from its pores. It suffered from Tiny Bathroom with Window in Tub, though and though I really loved the kitchen in this one, too, and the location, the personality, etc., it was overpriced for the condition it's in (it's a foreclosure -- in good shape, not a complete disaster but still would need a bit of TLC, and you have to take those on as-is so you can't make the seller do anything).

Still, it was a fun time, and I think we established the baseline for what I'm looking for. My realtor is a great guy, and we had fun tromping around the area (all the condos today were within a few blocks of each other).

More looking at some point next week.

Bad colors are just cosmetic and can be changed. When I watch House Hunters and similar shows, people always think it's a "deal breaker" when color is bad. Easiest thing to change.

Continued good luck on your hunt!

Yeah, I think I know all about repainting -- perhaps you remember my parents' house before pix, or did we never show you those? :)

No, didn't get to see the "before" pictures, but with a classic house from that era, I bet it was a doozy!

Good luck on the continued search. Can't wait to see what you come up with! :)

My flat had some "interesting" colours when I bought it. The woman before me had half of the hall was purple the centre was a wallpaper runner and the top half bright yellow. The living room was a washy green and the 2nd bedroom was bottom half wall paper and another bloody runner with the top half blue.

The only paint job worth keeping was an aquamarine bathroom and I have half tiled that room when I put a shower in.

Still it was nothing that a couple of tins of magnolia and one of egyptian sand couldn't fix

Yeah, I know all about rehabbing places. My parents house was a huge mess when they bought it including appalling paint colors and is now a showplace.

I didn't like that apartment enough to worry about what I'd do to improve it, so I was just highlighting some of the details -- nice space and good kitchen but poor colors and little personality.

Ok,pardon my ignorance, but why thumbs down on the window in the bathroom? Just looks tacky or is it a privacy thing....

No, it's in the bath*tub* not in the bathroom. In. The. Tub. An actual, full-sized window. Like I have now. That I have to put a separate shower curtain over or it will rot. Because it's a window that isn't meant to get wet. That's in the tub.

I've seen this in buildings far too new to justify the "pre-shower as standard bathing device" idea I first had about why this was happening. And it's WEIRD.

I have no issues with a window in the bathroom itself.

Ok,I gotcha. Literally IN the tub. Yeah, I think I'd have to give that a pass,as well(especially if it's in my current bathroom/apartment)

As you can see, it makes me a bit hysterical, but seriously, it is this crazy Chicago quirk that is very common. Sometimes they're more like portholes and they're all glass block and smoked glass and they don't need covered and, yeah, okay, but there are so many of these full-sized normal windows in the tub in this town. What the heck, Chicago?
